The women and men who bring Genotoul to life!

Their professions are carried out within a specific framework: research platforms. The role of technical staff working on platforms has grown considerably over the past 20 years, alongside the development of shared infrastructures such as those of Genotoul. This type of profession has even been formally recognized in the national job classification framework for research and higher education (REFERENS), under titles such as “Biologist Engineer in a Scientific Platform” or “Engineer in Biological Experimentation and Instrumentation.”

Platform-based positions now represent a very significant share of recruitment for engineers and technicians!

In this regard, don’t miss the special 25th anniversary Genotoul video testimonials, as well as presentations from platform managers available on our channel:

Pooling resources and expertise across public research laboratories in the life sciences—transcending institutional boundaries (universities, research organizations)—has become essential in response to the rapid expansion of technologies and their associated costs. This has also been accompanied by opening up these technological resources to innovation in the private sector. The Toulouse research hub has been a pioneer in this field, 25 years after the creation of Genotoul.

Certification, quality standards, service catalogues, pricing, invoicing…

These terms are now part of the daily life of platform staff. Working on a platform offers the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of research projects, often presenting technical challenges that enable continuous skill development. It also requires balancing regulatory or financial management tasks—which may be less appealing—with the expectations and urgent needs of users. This is truly a new profession, with its own specific requirements and competencies. For this reason, in 2025 Genotoul, together with its supervisory institutions, launched cross-disciplinary training programs for platform staff.

The new edition of the Genotoul booklet once again highlights the achievements of platform personnel within a constantly evolving scientific and technological landscape in Toulouse, without forgetting those who work in laboratories and central administrative services to ensure the smooth operation of the platforms.
